Can You Work Out With Extensions? Here's What Home Care Actually Looks Like

One of the first questions we hear from new extension clients is, "Can I still work out?"

The answer is always yes.

Extensions aren't meant to keep you from living your life. They're meant to fit into it. Whether your routine looks like strength training, Pilates, hot yoga, long walks around the neighborhood, or simply surviving another humid Nashville summer, your hair should be able to come with you.

The difference isn't whether you can work out. It's knowing how to care for your hair afterward.

Here's what we recommend.

Before Your Workout: Keep It Secure

The less your hair moves during a workout, the happier it will be afterward.

We usually recommend styles that keep the hair contained without creating unnecessary tension.

Some of our favorites:

  • A loose braid

  • Two braids

  • A low ponytail

  • A low bun if you're doing lower-impact movement

Whenever you're tying your hair back, we recommend reaching for one of our Tomboy Mulberry Silk Scrunchies. Silk is gentler on both your natural hair and your extensions than traditional hair ties, helping reduce friction, creasing, and unnecessary tension while keeping everything comfortably in place during your workout.

One thing we don't recommend is wearing the same tight, high ponytail every day. Your extensions are durable, but rotating your hairstyles helps avoid putting repeated stress on the same areas and supports the long-term health of your natural hair.

Sweat Isn't the Problem. Buildup Is.

Many people assume sweating means they need to wash their hair every day.

Not necessarily.

What matters most is your scalp.

If you've had a particularly sweaty workout, give your scalp some attention. Dry your roots if they're staying damp for a while, and don't let sweat sit on the scalp day after day.

Healthy extensions start with a healthy scalp. Keeping your scalp clean helps prevent buildup and keeps your natural hair growing well underneath your extensions.

You Don't Have to Blow Dry Every Time

Summer is one of our favorite seasons to lean into easier styling.

If you're washing your hair after a workout, don't feel like you have to reach for a round brush every time.

Air drying is completely fine. The key is making sure your scalp is fully dry before tying your hair back or heading to bed. Moisture trapped at the scalp isn't ideal for your natural hair or your extension installation.

Once your scalp is dry, let the rest of your hair finish air drying if that's your preference.

The Products We Reach For Most

A simple routine usually works best.

Milbon Wave Defining Cream

If your hair has any natural wave or texture, this is the season to embrace it.

Curl Defining Cream adds moisture, soft definition, and helps control frizz so your hair can air dry beautifully without feeling crunchy or stiff.

Milbon Sea Salt Spray

For clients who love an effortless, lived-in look, Sea Salt Spray creates soft texture and movement without making the hair feel heavy.

Together, these products make it easy to skip the daily blowout while still feeling polished.

Healthy Extensions Happen at Home

The appointments matter.

Your home care matters just as much.

Brushing regularly, keeping your scalp clean, sleeping with your hair protected, and using professional products all work together to help your extensions stay beautiful between maintenance appointments.

Our goal has never been to create hair that's high maintenance.

It's to create hair that works with your life.

Thinking About Extensions?

Every extension consultation at Tomboy starts with a conversation about your lifestyle.

We want to know how often you work out, how you usually wear your hair, how much time you like to spend styling it, and what you want your routine to look like.

That way, we can build an installation and home care plan that fits you, not the other way around.

If you're considering extensions and wondering how they'd fit into your everyday life, we'd love to talk through it with you.
